3D Modelling of Contamination in Soil Chaired by John Hunt, GHD

10.30am - 12.10pm

Geostatistical 3D Modelling of Contamination in Soil using EVS for non-statisticians – Traps and Lessons Learned

Prepared and presented by Dr Pete Beck and Nader El-Benni with the assistance of Dr John Hunt GHD

The 3D modelling workshop will focus on the following key aspects when undertaking 3D modelling of contamination datasets:

  • Some brief discussion of uncertainty and decision error;

  • Consideration of prediction error when using point data for spatial interpolation;

  • Deterministic and Geospatial Interpolation Routines

  • The meaning and properties of the variogram (semi-variogram) and how they relate to the real world data

  • Principles of Kriging and Indicator Kriging

  • Working through a real world data set to develop a defensible 3D model of contaminant distribution

The workshop intends to provide contaminated land professionals who use 3D models with food for thought on the meaning and limitations of 3D models applied to contamination data, by highlighting key considerations for developing a more reliable 3D spatial interpolation of point datasets.
